Member-owned hall open for business
As it became obvious the Local 258 IBEW union hall was aging and the office space was no longer meeting the needs of staff and membership at its long-time location on 6th Street in south Burnaby, a suggestion came forward from the union’s lawyer, the late Rebecca Murdock, who worked in the building, that maybe it was time to start looking for a new union hall.
The suggestion went forward to the Local 258 Executive Board and a review process got underway. Under the leadership of past president Brother Tony Brand, an assessment was ordered on the building to determine if it was both feasible and cost-effective to repair the myriad of problems with the building, including water leakage causing mould, frequent flooding in the basement where important files were being stored, and ongoing and escalating costly problems with building maintenance.
When the results of the review were studied by the L258 E-Board, it was determined we needed a new building. Notice was sent by letter was sent to each union member advising a vote would be taken at the next union meeting seeking approval to move forward with the plans to locate a property and determine the details of a new union hall.
Members approved the motion for the Local 258 IBEW Holding Society to proceed and the search began.
Ultimately, it was determined a custom new build would be the best option, and after a few false starts, plans were presented to the union’s Holding Society to purchase the entire first floor of a yet-to-be built commercial strata office building in a convenient location in Langley.
With the new building under construction, the old union hall went up for sale and in August 2018, and sold fairly quickly. Arrangements were made with the new owner to lease the space until our new building was ready for occupancy and, finally, the move took place in April of this year.
Located in the three-storey Spire Professional Centre on a one acre lot at 8029 199 Street in Langley, south of Highway 1 and west of the Langley Events Centre, Local 258 IBEW owns the entire first floor - a 16,975 square foot office space. Entrance to the union hall is the first door to your right when you enter the north side of the building via the stairway from the ground level parking lot on 199 Street. There are reserved parking spaces for Local 258 visitors in the outdoor lot.
The new office space includes a large training and education meeting space that has already been used for the Unit 6 meeting (entrance to future meetings will be via the door on the south side of the building facing 80th Avenue).
An Open House is being planned sometime after everything is settled from the move and members will be invited.
