August, 2018 - In our ongoing support of our members and strengthening our ties to the community, Local 258 IBEW renewed our sponsorship of Wheelchair Rugby Canada (WRC) and this year’s Canada Cup 2018 International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament that took place at the Richmond Olympic Oval in June.
Our involvement with WRC began in 2014 when Brother Bob Hirschfield, who works as a PLT for BC Hydro on Vancouver Island, brought a sponsorship opportunity for the Canada Cup Tournament to the Union’s attention. At the time, Bob’s son Trevor played on Team Canada and Bob was volunteering as the team’s equipment manager.
Since then, we have grown our relationship with WRC and have gained mutually beneficial results with our support. Our valuable sponsorship helps the team cover costs for everything from travel and accommodation to training camps and court rental fees. With last year’s sponsorship, Local 258 IBEW secured placement of our logo on team jerseys, jackets, polo shirts and equipment bags as the team competed at the 2017 Americas Championship in Asunción, Paraguay. Our Union was also recognized as a Presenting Partner at the Wheelchair Rugby 40th Anniversary Celebration in Ottawa last December.
As the popularity of this exciting sport explodes across the country and around the world, our Local 258 and the IBEW logos and name have received exposure on Team Canada’s social media feeds, on live website broadcasts of their competitions, with placement on the tournament’s website at www.canadacupwcrugby.com and on WRC’s website.
Team co-captain Trevor Hirschfield was the special guest speaker at our Shop Steward’s Conference Banquet Dinner last November where he made a very moving speech that brought a standing ovation from the delegates. He also brought greetings from the team as well as thanks and appreciation from WRC. Trevor also surprised us when he gifted our Union with an autographed jersey as an expression of gratitude for our Union’s ongoing support.
The team is now heading to Australia for the 2018 World Wheelchair Rugby Championship that gets underway on starting on August 5th. Although Bob no longer volunteers directly with the team, his support continues to run deep. Recently he was in the audience at the 2018 Canada Cup in Richmond, together with his wife Marilyn and – celebrating Trevor and his wife Lisa’s recent arrival – grandson Kohen James Hirschfield! Congratulations to all.
