June, 2016 – Local 258 IBEW was proud to show our support for our members who displayed their skills, abilities and knowledge in competitions and demonstrations at this year’s Safety Rodeo that took place in Surrey at the rodeo grounds at BC Hydro’s Trades Training Centre on Saturday, June 11, 2016.

Inclement weather that saw rain, a brisk wind and lower-than-usual temperatures made for an unusual start to the competition that got underway early Saturday morning after competitors, judges and event organizers were led into the rodeo grounds by a piper. MC Dale Haines, retired lineman and IBEW 258 Recording Secretary, welcomed BC Hydro CEO Jessica McDonald to the opening ceremonies where, after extending greetings to the competitors, she led a moment of silence after reading out the names of workers who have lost their lives over the years in the course of their work at BC Hydro.

MoveUP Vice President Gwenne Farrell was introduced and gave welcoming remarks followed by Brother Doug McKay, Business Manager of Local 258 IBEW, who rang the bell to get the competition underway.

This year’s Rodeo had more teams competing in the pole events than ever before as over 2200 guests streamed onto the grounds throughout the day. Members working in Generation were represented as they showcased their skills in the Electrical Demonstration, and first time competitions took place with 3-person and 2-person Confined Space Rescue teams. Driving, Forklift and Knot Tying competitions rounded out the day of events.

The highlight of the Rodeo were the PLT competitions that saw three-person teams of Masters and Journeymen Power Line Technicians (PLTs) showcasing their skills in various categories including Hurt Man Rescue, two Mystery Events (where competitors are unaware of the assigned task until the competition gets underway) and the popular Egg Climb. Apprentices competed individually in similar categories as well as the Written Exam. All PLT competitions were closely observed and timed by a team of over 50 skilled PLTs who served as Judges for the pole events.

Congratulations to everyone who participated, including all the volunteers and retired IBEW members who “raised the bar” for the success of this year’s Safety Rodeo.
