November, 2015 - The inaugural meeting of the IBEW BC Provincial Women’s Committee took place in October in Kamloops with IBEW union Sisters attending from all BC Locals - 213, 230, 258, 993 and 1003 - and featuring representation from the Yukon!
The 30 delegates at the meeting had an opportunity to hear from guest speakers Brother Laird Cronk, International Rep for BC, Alberta and the Yukon, Brother Glen Hilton, Business Manager for Local 993 in Kamloops and Carol MacLeod from the National Electrical Trades Council.
Local 258 had a strong contingent of members at the meeting who have now formed the Local 258 IBEW Women’s Committee, with Sister Nicole Biernaczyk, Assistant Business Manager with the union, serving as Chair.
“Each of the Local Committees will be recruiting Sisters from across their Locals to join together in an atmosphere of solidarity,” said Nicole. “Our goal is to educate, assist, support and empower women in our union. We plan on having open meetings and will be asking Sisters to join our Local 258 IBEW Women’s Committee and engage in open and honest discussion to identify some of the barriers we face as women and ways we can work together to help bring those barriers down.”
Sister Biernaczyk indicated the group would also like to participate in community events and volunteer where they can.
Local 258 IBEW Women’s Committee members who also attended the meeting in Kamloops are: Sister Regan Yeadon (Vice Chair), member working at Valley Traffic and serving as a Shop Steward; Sister Cathy Tagseth (Secretary Treasurer), member working at BC Hydro and serving as Unit 5 Chair and as a Shop Steward; Sister Karen Porter, member working at BC Hydro and serving as Unit 2 Vice Chair and as a Shop Steward; Sister Carolyn Furler, member working at BC Hydro and serving as Unit 2 Member-at-Large; and Sister Carolyn Lawrence, member working at BC Hydro and serving as a Shop Steward.
