Local 258 IBEW's Dan Klassen, who works in the Burnaby office as an Assistant Business Manager, was the recipient of the 2013 Joe Morris Community Service Award, presented by the United Way of the Lower Mainland at the Labour Appreciation Dinner that took place in Burnaby at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown Hotel on December 5.
Brother Klassen's long time volunteer activities, both in the community and with the United Way were recognized as his co-workers, fellow union members and family looked on.
"I am very honoured by this award", said Brother Klassen. "There are so many people to thank, including, of course, my wife Yvonne, my family and to those members of IBEW who helped kick start me when I was recovering from a workplace injury, specifically Brother Murray McDonald. I'd also like to thank Ken Isomura, who's now retired from the United Way and Brother Doug McKay who has been very generous in supporting my volunteer work with the United Way."
The annual event also recognized two other award recipients: Seth Klein of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives who was awarded the Syd Thompson Community Service Award and Mae Burrows, long time environmental activist and Environmental Health Educator who received the New Westminster & District Labour Council's Community Service Award.
Sponsored by Pacific Blue Cross, the well-attended evening highlighted the 20 year working partnership between the United Way and Canada's labour movement.
