On October 31, 2012, IBEW lost a Brother lineman in Sarnia while he repaired power lines damaged by the remnants of Hurricane Sandy after the storm travelled through this southern Ontario city.
Brother Mike Leach was killed as he used a bucket truck to repair fallen lines. Leach, 47, was electrocuted while fixing downed power lines in Bright's Grove in the aftermath of one of the worst storms in the past 40 years that knocked out power to as many as 30,000 residents in the Sarnia area.
He was a lineman for more than 20 years and previously worked in Nova Scotia. He moved to Sarnia four years ago and was employed by Bluewater Power.
IBEW International Vice President Phil Flemming, in a letter sent to all IBEW Locals across Canada, wrote, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to members of Local 1802 and the family of our deceased Brother."
Brother Leach will be laid to rest on November 6 and leaves behind his wife, a son and daughter and two grandchildren.
The Ontario Labour Ministry continues to investigate his death.
